Mid-Atlantic Technical Engineering (MATE), a full service
professional engineering firm, is the latest new venture from
the scientists and engineers at MATRIC in South Charleston,
WV.
MATE is housed in Building 2000 at the Dow Technology Park and
represents the next steps in MATRIC's progression toward
building a complete research and commercialization
enterprise. Through the first four years of MATRIC's research
and development, our customers began to inquire about our
ability to help them take the new processes and products that
were successful in the laboratories and help them design and
build full-scale production facilities.
As we began to support the design of the biodiesel plant for
our partner BEST Biodiesel, we realized that talented
engineers were not enough to accomplish large projects. Our
research organization did not have the processes, specialized
tools, procurement systems and professional certifications.
MATE, which is led by one of the most experienced
professional engineers in West Virginia, B.F. "Cap" Smith, has
attracted a multi-disciplinary group of engineers and designers
that have the resources necessary to complete significant
projects. Our chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil,
automation and control systems engineers use disciplined
processes and state-of-the-art software tools in a specially
designed engineering facility.
Though we continue to grow and optimize the MATE organization,
we have over 50 professional staff and optimistic plans to
double in size over the next 18 months. As you can read
below, we are accomplishing some very significant projects for
natural gas, chemical, and biofuels clients.
In a period of economic uncertainty, we pray that we will have
the opportunity to expand these opportunities into a long-term
engineering business headquartered right here in West
Virginia.

Project Management Services Supplied to WV Water Agencies |
|
A contract was awarded to MATE in
December,
2008 to provide comprehensive project management services to
the State of West Virginia for coordination of a statewide
Comprehensive Water and Wastewater Planning Study (CPS). The
two phase project is expected to last several years, with the
goal of providing a roadmap and a tool going forward in
providing much needed infrastructure and basic water and
wastewater services to the many unserved residents of the
State of West Virginia. This project is being sponsored by the
West Virginia Water Development Authority (WDA) and the West
Virginia Infrastructure Jobs and Development Council (IJDC). |

Biofuels Project Executed in Record Time with Low Cost |
|
MATE engineers are completing a multi-million dollar upgrade
to a biodiesel plant for BEST Energies in Wisconsin. This
upgrade will allow the efficient use of low cost feedstocks,
which is key to economical production. The new biodiesel
technology dramatically reduces the capital and operations
costs as well as nearly eliminates off-site emissions. In
addition, engineering costs were about half of what they would
normally be on a typical project of this size. Cap Smith, MATE
Director of Engineering, said that this execution is a good
example of all phases of R&D and engineering disciplines
working together in a close-knit, well-managed fashion.

Methomyl & Larvin Reconstruction Project: Bayer Cropscience |
|
A MATE engineering project team has been supplying their
services to the Bayer CropScience Methomyl and Larvin
incident reconstruction project at Bayer's Institute, WV
facility. Project work for the end of 2008 included
replacement of all instruments and equipment in the MIC
Utilities area and the Larvin K-Structure. This involved
equipment specification, engineering and design, as well as
considerable procurement and expediting. Future work
may include
improvement and cost savings projects in the utility area,
including upgrades to plant boilers, water softener, and
updating the utility area control systems. Other plant
maintenance of business plant support projects is also
predicted. |
